Transforming Transportation, One ‘Best Day at Work’ at a Time

I love everything about my job, but some of my best days are when I spend time with our engineers – from new grads to those who’ve been on the team for decades. They push for solutions that improve our customers’ lives and help solve some of our biggest global challenges.

For the men and women who are driving our efforts to lead the transformation of personal mobility, their hunger to improve and innovate is constant. A few highlights from my 2016 “best days at work” are because of our team’s passion, ingenuity and determination:

  • Certainly one of my best days at work was in January when we introduced the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Another was when the Bolt EV team not only met the 200 miles of all-EV range we promised, but exceeded it – without compromising our already aggressive production timeline. And, now at 238 miles of EPA-estimated range and production underway just outside Detroit, the team’s speed and tenacity prove what can be accomplished when you keep raising the bar.
  • While meeting with our Cruise Automation team in San Francisco this summer, I had the opportunity to experience my first ride in an autonomous Bolt EV being tested on the city’s challenging streets. The team continues to act like a startup. Their energy and enthusiasm inspires the larger GM team to move with the speed and urgency we need to transform this industry.
  • Early this year, I attended the launch of Maven in Ann Arbor, Mich. – home of the University of Michigan. Since then the team behind our Maven brand has established customer and campus car sharing and ridesharing services in 13 U.S. cities. The team has filed seven applications for patents to make vehicle sharing more intelligent, and just as important, shows what a focused and fast team can accomplish in a short period of time.

We know the auto industry is in the midst of more change now than in the past 50 years. If you’re willing to push the boundaries of what we thought was possible, the automotive industry still offers those engineering "aha" moments that remind us we’re part of something bigger than ourselves. Every best day at work brings us closer to transforming personal mobility and improving lives.

Making improvements on a continuing basis is very important for all of us to accomplish. GM has accomplished many industrial(automobile) improvements, and we are thankful that Mary Barra is leading the charge.

I think articulate posts like this are confidence boosters to stakeholders and potential investors. Good job.
